Please use the menu to the left for descriptions of the USOEC freestyle resident program. Below is a description of the USOTC, USAW, and the major international competitions the USOEC freestyle resident athletes are training for.
U.S. Olympic Training Centers U.S. Olympic Education Center. In February, 1989, the U.S. Olympic Committee named Northern Michigan University (NMU) as the nation's only United States Olympic Education Center (USOEC). The USOEC's main focus is the resident athlete training program, where athletes actively train for the Olympic Games while also continuing their education.
Generally, athletes in this program must be nationally ranked and also approved by their national governing body (NGB), the USOEC, and NMU. The USOEC has resident athlete training programs in freestyle wrestling, short track speedskating, Greco-Roman wrestling, and weightlifting. More
USA Wrestling USA Wrestling Resident Athlete Programs. The purpose of the USOEC freestyle resident athlete program (a USAW resident athlete program) is to ready athletes for the Olympic Games. The USOEC freestyle resident athletes become prepared for the Olympic Games by qualifying for and then competing in these major international competitions: World University Games, World University Championships, Youth Olympic Games, and Jr. World Championships. Olympic Games Olympic Games. The 2012 Olympics will be held in London, England. This multi sport international competition is the pinnacle of what Team USA is training for. USOEC freestyle resident athletes begin the road to the Olympic Games by competing and training in continental championships, world championships, national training camps, and international training camps. World Championships World University Championships. World University Championships (WUC), an age group international world championship, are held every 2 years (even years e.g. 2006, 2008, etc.) for college, university USOEC freestyle resident student athletes.
The USAW University Nationals is the qualifier for the World University Championships. USOEC freestyle resident student athletes who are unable to qualify for the WUC serve as training partners for Team USA at this world championship.
World University Games. World University Games (WUG), an age group multi-sport international world championship, are held every 2 years (odd years e.g. 2005, 2007, etc.) for college, university USOEC freestyle resident student athletes.
The USAW University Nationals is the qualifier for the World University Games. USOEC freestyle resident student athletes who are unable to qualify for the WUG serve as training partners for Team USA at this world championship.
Jr. World Championships. Jr. World Championships, an age group world championship, are held annually for junior level wrestlers or wrestlers 17-20 years of age or the age of most USOEC freestyle resident athletes.
The USAW Body Bar Nationals is the qualifier for the Jr. World championships. USOEC freestyle resident athletes who are unable to qualify for the Jr. Worlds serve as training partners for Team USA at this world championship.
